Europe tends to be chilly in January — in some locations even freezing. So it is maybe shocking that so many New Yr’s Day traditions contain plunging into icy water — from Rome’s Tiber river to Berlin’s Oranke Lake; the Netherlands’ North Sea to Eire’s Atlantic Ocean.
