5 players score double-figures as South downs North in Sports Week boys basketball


Five players notched double-figures as the South downed the North 88-75 in All-Star Sports Week boys basketball at Alabama State’s Dunn-Oliver Acadome in Montgomery on Tuesday.

Ellwood Christian forward Justin Bufford scored 17 of his game-high 19 points in the second half to help the South pull away. He also had five rebounds as the South turned a 17-all first quarter tie into a 40-35 halftime lead they wouldn’t relinquish for the second straight win in the series, led by the North 48-29.

South MVP Antwan Burnett of Sidney Lanier added 16 points and 10 rebounds while Sumter Central’s Kedrick Turnipseed scored 15 points, UMS-Wright’s Robert Bonham added 12 and Carver-Montgomery’s Michael Murry scored 10 points.

Mountain Brook’s Colby Jones scored 12 of his team-high 18 points in the first half and the North was 8-for-8 at the foul line in the first half to keep the game close. Jones also had 10 rebounds to earn MVP honors for the North.

The North got 14 points from Pinson Valley’s Kam Woods and 12 from Damarcus Beckwith of Florence. Tommy Murr of Lindsay Lane, who led the nation in scoring last season with 45.1 points per game, had seven points.
