This writing project, which has been described as one of the most detailed accounts of Marine action ever written, got off the ground in 2014, three years after Bennett’s death at age 92. It began as a labor of love for his old friend, who Peterson met at an Aurora church function in 1975. The two struck up a close relationship where Bennett, who the author describes as “the finest man I’ve ever known … a mix of John Wayne, Billy Graham and Mr. Rogers,” began opening up about those brutal battles through the Solomon Islands, Tarawa, Saipan and Tinian.
