TAMPA, Fla. — As new coach Bruce Arians was addressing Jameis Winston’s chronic turnover problem in the offseason, a key talking point was that many of his interceptions would go away if the Bucs just got out of the habit of falling behind early and having to throw the ball 40-plus times a game.

“Hopefully … we won’t be playing from 20 behind all the time,” Arians said in April.

And as much as the Bucs (3-7) want to put back-to-back 5-11 seasons behind them, Sunday’s 34-17 loss to the Saints was very much a rerun that followed the very script Arians sought to avoid this year. Poor play on both sides of the ball led to a quick 20-0 deficit, which meant Winston threw 51 passes, including another four interceptions, including his fourth pick-six of the season.
