Texas A&M’s latest coaching hire continues to draw national praise.
In a roundup of recent men’s basketball coaching hires, Stadium named A&M’s hire of Buzz Williams the best one.
The Aggies formally introduced the former A&M assistant and Van Alstyne native on April 4. Williams was responsible for lifting Virginia Tech from the bottom of the ACC to the Sweet 16 round of this year’s NCAA tournament.
Even though Stadium’s Jeff Goodman expressed some concerns about Williams’ ability to recruit, he delivered high praise for former athletic director Scott Woodward’s final move before he left for the same job at LSU.
“Regardless, Williams is a home run — no, a grand slam — for Texas A&M,” Goodman wrote.
Williams went 100-69 in five seasons at Virginia Tech and is 253-155 overall. Williams agreed to a six-year deal worth $24.3 million in base salary.
A&M has not formally announced any new members of Williams’ coaching staff. However, that hasn’t stopped Williams from restocking the Aggies’ 2019 recruiting class. A&M has three players committed to sign in this cycle and a fourth who is looking to reclassify as a 2019 prospect.
