A record number of fitness centers have opened on Long Island in recent years. With so many treadmills, stationary bikes and elliptical machines seeing heavy use, someone has to fix the equipment when it breaks down.

Fitness Machine Technicians, a fitness repair franchise based in Malvern, Penn., recently entered the Long Island market. The Long Island location is owned by David Block, who will operate the franchise out of his Dix Hills home. Block, who had a car wrapped with Fitness Machine Technicians branding, will send technicians to service clients throughout Nassau and Suffolk.

The franchise company, which has locations in 16 states, offers repair and maintenance services on a variety of exercise equipment, on either a contract or non-contract basis, to not only health clubs, but also hotels, condo complexes, corporations, universities and residences.

Block said he saw a need in the local marketplace for equipment servicing.

“As a gym-goer and elliptical owner, working out is a part of my daily routine,” he said in a statement. “When equipment goes down, it can be hard to find a reliable source to fix such specialized machines.”

Block’s background is in advertising and sports marketing. He has worked for Turner Broadcasting, NASCAR and AT&T Wireless, and, most recently, he co-ran a summer camp in Upstate New York with his wife.

Block said he plans to hire “several local technicians” to service the territory over the next two years.

“Long Island’s large population of both residential and commercial areas will keep our technicians busy,” he said.
