Greenwood boys take third at meet | Sports

The Greenwood High boys placed third and the girls fourth at the Division 3-4A meet held last week at Mississippi Valley State University.

The boys finished with 58 team points. Clarksdale was first with 106 points, and Rosa Fort was second with 87. Gentry came in fourth with 53 points, and Yazoo City was fifth with 49 points.

In the girls division, Clarksdale won the meet with 155 1/2 points. Yazoo City took second with 57 points, and Rosa Fort was third with 52 1/2 points. Greenwood took fourth with 41 points, and Gentry was last with 38 points.

Only the top four finishers in each event qualified for the Region 2 meet, which was held Monday at Center Hill.

For the boys, Johnathan Brown was second in the 800-meter run in 2:18, and Mikeldrick Burch was third in the same event in 2:22. Burch placed second in the 1600m run in 5:32 and third in the 3200m run in 14:56.

The 4×100 relay team was first in 44.08, and the 4×200 relay team came in second in 1:33.02. The 4×800 relay team placed second in 9:43.

Jaterrious Elam took second in the long jump in 19-06, and Brown was fourth in 18-09.50. Brown was first in the triple jump in 38-03.

For the girls, Jireh Nivels won the 100 dash in 12.90. Tierianna Foreman was third and Taylah Scott fourth in the 1600m run in 8:48 and 8:58, respectively.

The 4×200 relay team was second ibn 1:54.05, and the 4×100 relay team was fourth in 55.09. Janiya Scott came in second in the high jump in 4-06, and Arieyanna Glover was fourth in 4-02.

Sydney Brooks placed second in the discus in 70-04 and third in the shot put in 26-09.50.

n Leflore County: Willie McCline placed first in the 100-meter dash and third in the 200-meter dash at the Division 2-2A meet held April 9 at Winona High School.

He ran the 100 in 11.23 and the 200 in 22.63. He and the other top four finishers qualified for the Region 2 meet Friday at Potts Camp High School.

Others for the boys to place in the top four were David O’Neal with a fourth in the 1600m run with a time of 5:45.14. The 4×100 and 4×200 relay teams were both first in 46.49 and 1:34.12. The 4×400 relay team came in second in 3:46, and the 4×800 relay team was also second in 9:45.06.

Maurice Edwards was first in the discus with a toss of 109 feet.

For the girls, the 4×100, 4×200 and 4×400 relay teams were all fourth in times of 1:00.70, 2:02.42, and 6:16.

D’Mya Young came in first in the high jump in 5-02, and Merciana Sandifer was third in the shot put in 27-07. Teammate D’Kayla Young was fourth in 24-08.

n Amanda Elzy: The Lady Panthers fared quite well at the Division 3-3A meet held April 11 at Winona High School.

Gabrielle Boyd came in first in the 800-meter run in 2:56 and third in the 400 run in 1:12. The 4×400 relay team placed first in 4:40. Selonia Groves was second in the discus with a toss of 79-01. The 4×800 relay team came in second in 12:34. The 4×200 relay team was third in 1:55.45, and the 4×100 relay team was fourth in 54.73.

For the boys, Dontavious McGill was second in the 400 run in 53.58, and the 4×200 relay team was third in 1:35.97. Stephen Banks took fourth in the 110 hurdles in 19.36, and the 4×400 relay team was fourth in 3:50. La’Andre Pittman was second in the discus in 113-00.75.

n J.Z. George: The Jaguars will be sending six boys to the Region 2 meet Friday at Winona High School. Those six qualified in three events at the Division 3-3A meet held April 11 at Winona.

Chris Rias was fourth in the 3200m run in 12:523, and Montavis Jenkins was fourth in the discus in 110-10. The 4×800 relay team of Devontae Smith, Ceasa Glenn, Malik Branch and Marquinn Watt was second in 9:44.
