French president’s party was keen to ditch the L-word.

Emmanuel Macron’s party and European Liberals have chosen a name for their new group in the European Parliament — Renew Europe.

The group brings together members of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (ALDE), Macron’s La République En Marche and others. Macron’s party was adamant that it wanted to avoid the word “liberal,” which is often used negatively in France as a representation of heartless ultra-capitalism.

“The ALDE Group in the European Parliament has been renamed RENEW EUROPE,” tweeted Chris Davies, a member of the group from Britain’s Liberal Democrats. “This should keep our new French partners content, but many of us will continue to refer to it as the Liberal Group.”

As POLITICO reported last month, Renew Europe was among four names under consideration for the group — alongside The Europeans, Europe Forward and something involving the word “Europa.”

The group has a provisional total of 110 seats in the new Parliament — 41 more than the old ALDE group, in large part thanks to Macron’s party and a surge of support for the U.K. Liberal Democrats. The French delegation is the biggest in the new group.
