Amanda Elzy picked up a much-needed win Friday as it knocked off Region 3-3A foe J.Z. George 15-3 to keep its hopes alive of making the playoffs.
The Panthers, who were scheduled to play a home doubleheader against Ruleville Monday, erupted for 16 hits against the Jaguars to improve to 4-9 overall and 1-7 in league play. Should Elzy sweep Ruleville and J.Z. George lose its last two district games to Humphreys County and Charleston, it would qualify as the No. 4 seed from the region.
Elzy plated two runs in the first, three in the second, six in the third and four in the fourth. The Jaguars (6-13, 3-5) scored two in the third and one in the fifth.
Deangelou Weatherall and Deontae Neal combined to limit J.Z. George to four hits. Weatherall, who got the win, went the first 21/3 innings, allowing no hits but hitting four batters. He struck out three and gave up two runs. Neal went the final 22/3 innings, allowing one run on four hits, striking out three.
Norman Polk had a single and two doubles and drove in five runs for Elzy. Kyrus Jones tacked on two doubles, a triple and three RBIs, and Dephabian Fant had three singles, an RBI and scored three runs. Neal finished with a single, double, two RBIs and four runs scored.
Daylen Hayes had a two-run double, and Ladarius Davenport and Greg Childress had two singles each.
For the Jaguars, Jacob Johnson and Brandon McKenzie had RBI singles, and WilTavious Williams and Athan Shute had a base hit apiece.
Michael Bankston took the loss on the mound as he went four innings, yielding all 15 runs on 16 hits, walking two and striking out three.
n Greenwood High: The Bulldogs closed out their 2019 campaign with a 9-4 loss to Gentry High School in a Region 3-4A contest in Indianola Friday.
Greenwood (2-8, 0-8) scored four runs in the second inning but gave up six runs in the third and three in the fifth.
Andrew Strong took the loss as he went the first three innings, allowing six runs on no hits, walking seven and fanning six. Warren Smith pitched the final two frames, yielding three runs on one hit, striking out two and walking six.
Walter Ivory had a double for Greenwood, and Cemadre Taylor, Smith, Darius Brown and Lavell Nelson a single each. Brown had one RBI.
n Leflore County: East Webster took a pair of games from the Tigers Friday to end Leflore’s season at 1-15 overall and 0-10 in Region 2-2A.
Kewon Wylie (1-4) took the loss in the first game, a 15-0 setback.
Wylie went all three innings, allowing the 15 runs on nine hits, walking five and fanning one. East Webster scored nine in the second and six in the third.
In the second game, the Wolves claimed a 13-3 victory as they scored five in the first, three runs each in the second and fifth frames, and two in the third.
Kevon Birdlong (0-7) took the loss as he gave up all 13 runs on 15 hits, walking seven and striking out one. He had a single, two RBIs and scored a run at the plate.
