Pillow Academy’s tennis team moved to 7-1 on the season as it won a thrilling 7-2 victory over Bayou Academy over the weekend in Cleveland. Three of the matches went to deciding third-set tiebreakers, with Pillow winning two of them.
Providing much of the spark was the senior clash between four-time defending AAAA singles state champion Sunjay Chawla and AAA top-ranked Rhodes Morgan. The Bayou star jumped out to a 4-3 lead in the first set before Chawla won it 6-4. Then the powerful hitting Morgan jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the second set before Chawla came back and won the match 6-4, 6-3.
Also winning thrilling victories for Pillow was the No. 1 doubles duo of John Hollis Tackett and John Heston Powers. After Tackett and Powers lost a heartbreaking first-set tiebreaker, the Mustang team came back and won 6-7, 7-5, 10-2. And the No. 2 doubles combo of Anne Craig Melton and Lizzie Powers continued their drive for a state doubles championship with an electrifying 6-3, 4-6, 10-5 victory.
Pillow’s singles players continued their dominating play. Floyd Melton IV won his fourth straight No. 2 singles match, defeating William Wessell 6-1, 6-3.
Dia Chawla won her fourth straight No. 1 girls singles match with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Abby Mardelta. And Avery McDaniel won again, defeating Libby Bassie in No. 2 girls singles 6-3, 6-1.
Pillow also won in mixed doubles with Cole Tyler and Julia Love Lyon winning 6-1, 6-3.
Falling for Pillow was the No. 1 girls doubles combination of Mari-Brian Crick and Madison Jefcoat, who lost a tough match 4-6, 6-1, 7-10. And the No. 2 boys doubles team of Arnav Thakur and Sumner Tackett lost 6-X, 7-6.
The Mustangs wrapped up the regular season Monday in a conference match against archrival Washington School in Greenville.
