Team USA’s win in France inspiring young athletes in East Tennessee

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) — The United States won its record-fourth Women’s World Cup title and second in a row, beating the Netherlands 2-0 Sunday.

While the women took home the title in France, girls in East Tennessee watched on.

Knox Crush Soccer is a youth team in Knoxville serving boys and girls.

Team USA inspired the girls, who one day hope to play on the same stage.

“I just want to be on that team, and I feel like I can get there if I try hard enough,” Hana Kirsch said.

The 14-year-old has been playing soccer since she was five years old. She hopes to play for the University of Tennessee and one day make it onto the national team.

“I have been watching Julia Ertz since I was eight,” Kirsch said. “Not only am I a girl, but I can play like a guy.”

Several girls on the Knox Crush Soccer team were decked in red, white and blue Sunday as they waited to cheer on their team.

“I’ve been watching them since I was very little. It’s great knowing that they all started out like us with the same dream,” Hannah Pike said. She’s been playing soccer for seven years.
