The Nintendo 3DS celebrates its 8th anniversary in North America

Today is March 27, 2019, which means its officially been eight years since the Nintendo 3DS first hit store shelves in North America back in 2011.

The aging handheld has lived a very long and prosperous life. Over 74.84 million units have been shipped worldwide since 2011. While growth has been steadily decreasing since the launch of the Switch, the fact that the 3DS has hit such a high number is still an achievement. Unlike past Nintendo handhelds, the 3DS had to compete with the rise of mobile gaming. That’s most likely a big reason as to why the 3DS hasn’t sold as well as its predecessor. Nevertheless, this is still a handheld that’s been loved by millions over the years.

At this point, the 3DS’ future is uncertain. Nintendo hasn’t mentioned any plans of discontinuation yet, but support from developers has been steadily decreasing for quite some time now. Thus, the 3DS’ days are certainly numbered, but its fascinating legacy will likely still be looked back fondly upon by gamers in just a matter of years.
